ALSO Instructor Course:   Thursday, November 5, 2026 & Friday, November 6, 2026 7:45 am – 4:00 pm Merritt Center, Marshall, MN

ALSO® Instructor COURSE

Use your passion for safe, equitable obstetric care to train others when you become an ALSO Approved Instructor. Learn how to guide medical colleagues through an ALSO® course to provide essential lifesaving care during pregnancy-related emergencies.

The ALSO Instructor Course is designed to teach individuals with a current ALSO status the skills and knowledge needed to effectively facilitate lectures and workstations at an ALSO course. Successful completion of this course, as well as evaluation and recommendation by an advisory faculty member, is required to become an ALSO approved instructor.

Participants attending an ALSO course learn practical, standardized and team-based approaches to managing emergency situations, such as postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, breech delivery, cord prolapse and maternal resuscitation.

Although labor and delivery room emergency care is the focus of the program, the ALSO curriculum further addresses preventive care and practice concerns, such as medical complications of pregnancy, preterm labor, labor dystocia, trauma and helping parents cope with a birth crisis.

OVERALL COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Discuss educational tools that can be used when giving feedback to ALSO® course participants.

2. Describe how to assist participants in dealing with questions and conflicts that can occur during the workstations.

3. Demonstrate teaching capabilities by providing hands on role-play utilizing maternal-fetal manikins along with timely feedback in order to adapt teaching methods to various situations.

4. Demonstrate the ability to facilitate group discussion, as well as consider ways to implement faculty and learner feedback to enhance the educational experience. (SRD)

AFTER THE LIVE COURSE

Furthermore, upon successful completion of this activity, learners will earn ALSO instructor candidate status. The next steps to become an approved instructor are to teach at an ALSO or BLSO course within one year of the Instructor Course date, while an advisory faculty observes and completes the instructor candidate evaluation. If recommended for approved instructor, the status will update in the learner’s AAFP account.

The ALSO Course Sponsor is responsible for submitting the post-course Dashboard within one week after the Live course. After this submission, the Learners will receive an email with a link which will direct them to their AAFP Account where they will find their Letter of Participation and Wallet Card. Only Learners who successfully complete both the online and the live portion of the course will receive ALSO Provider Status and a wallet card stating the status and expiration date.
