Description: This course consists of lab and lecture components related to perioperative nursing. The focus will be on fundamental principles related to providing safe care in the operating room environment. This includes: effective collaboration with team members, critical thinking, and implementing nursing guidelines, concepts, and skills related to the RN circulator role.
Objectives: Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the role of the circulating nurse.
- Demonstrate common circulating skills; positioning on OR tables, basic instrument identification, opening sterile supplies, counting sharps/sponges, OR prep/cleaning, patient prepping techniques, tracking blood loss, instrument sterility assurance.
- Explain important surgical principles; principles of asepsis, draping techniques, scrubbing, gowning, gloving, patient assessment, documentation, common types of anesthesia, measures taken for patient safely, proper OR attire, fires safety, and collaboration with anesthesia providers.
Who Should Attend: New Graduate RNs, Experienced RNs new to the OR, Pre/Post-op RNs
