This presentation will discuss the initial identification and management of burn injuries in the rural setting. We will discuss identification, classification, and pathophysiology of burns as well as their management strategies prior to transfer and admission to a burn unit.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Provide practical strategies for identification, assessment, and triage of burn injuries.
  2. Discuss pathophysiology of burn injuries and how to use it to our advantage as clinicians in a rural setting.
  3. Define three major priorities of initial burn care in the rural environment. 

  4. Introduce initial fluid resuscitation strategy that is easily applicable and provides cognitive         offloading for the clinician and improved care for the patient.

  5. Discuss major burn injuries and define “burn shock.”

  6. Provide framework for pain management in the burn patient population.

  7. Provide a brief insight into the trajectory of burn care after arrival at the burn center
